Print Directly From iPad/iPhone with AirPrint

From designtaxi.com/news, Sep 16, 2010

If not being able to print documents and images from the iPad is stopping you from getting one, Apple has just announced a wireless printing feature for the tablet, iPhone and iPod Touch.

Called AirPrint, the feature will automatically find printers on local networks and can print text, photos and graphics wirelessly over WiFi; and "no setup, no configuration, no printer drivers and no software" is needed, according to Apple senior vice president of worldwide marketing Philip Schiller.

"iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch users can simply tap to print their documents or photos," Schiller said in a statement.

HP is the first company to partner Apple to support printing direct from iOS devices, but AirPrint is also designed to support a wide range of printers ranging from entry-level inkjets to office laser printers.

Currently only available to developers, the full feature will be available in iOS 4.2 slated for a November public release. But will this feature make the iPad a standalone computer? For casual computer users, this might just be the draw they've been waiting for.
