After years of rumors and months of hype, the Apple iPad goes in sale in late March 2010. It’s then the public will learn whether the iPad just a source of jokes on the web or, as Apple promises, a truly revolutionary computing device. The iPad is much bigger than its predecessors, though, sporting a 9.7-inch screen and weighing in at 1.5 pounds. It’s just 0.5 inches thick, 9.56 inches tall, and 7.47 inches wide.
The iPad Under the Hood
The iPad comes in two models, one with WiFi connectivity only and one with WiFi and a 3G connection provided by AT&T for an additional monthly fee. Both models come in 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB versions. Prices run from US$499-$829, depending on features. The device runs on a 1Ghz Apple A4 processor, the first device to use that chip. Its battery is rated for up to 10 hours of use and days of standby. It includes A-GPS, a digital compass, and the standard iPod dock connector.
Apps and Features
Because it runs the iPhone OS, the iPad supports App Store programs. It can run them in their native mode (at about the size of the iPhone’s screen), at fullscreen (using an upscaling process), or can be rewritten to take advantage of the larger screen. The iPad ships some of the same apps found on the iPhone and iPod touch, and introduces iBooks, Apple’s e-book reader and store (though the app is a separate, free download, not pre-installed). Apple will be releasing versions of its iWork productivity suite specially designed for the iPad. The chart below shows the comparing features of iPad, iPhone 3GS and iPod touch:
